Archaeological impact assessments form a major component of planning applications. They are used to determine what effect the impact will have on the archaeological remains.
Archaeological testing is also referred to as ‘test trenching’ and usually involves excavating a number of trenches across the proposed development area. The purpose of test excavation is to establish the nature and extent of archaeological deposits and features present in a location
Some planning conditions may stipulate that ground works on a development must be ‘monitored’ by an archaeologist to ensure the protection of archaeological deposits which may be uncovered or otherwise affected by the works.
Archaeological excavation is the systematic recording and removal of layers of soil, deposits, structures and artefacts by a qualified archaeologist. It is sometimes required when previously unknown sites are recovered during development.
Geophysical surveys are used to identify any potential subsurface archaeological deposits and features prior to proposed developments. They can sometimes be included as part of an archaeological assessment.
