An archaeological assessment is the investigation of known, suspected or previously unidentified monuments, sites or areas of archaeological potential in order to assess the impact which the proposed development may have on them. Archaeological impact assessments form a major component of planning applications. They are used to determine what effect the impact will have on the archaeological remains.  The process involves documentary research, walkover surveys, topographical survey and an in-depth review of all historical, archaeological and cartographic resources. Impact assessments can be required either as independent reports or as part of an overall environmental impact assessment/statement (EIA/EIS). We produce a fully illustrated assessment report based on the results of the documentary research and any fieldwork, including testing or geophysical survey. The aim of the report is to allow the relevant authorities to make an informed planning decision in each individual case. In most cases, no further archaeological input is required and the authorities may allow a development to proceed.
